This course provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the economy of the European Union emphasizing the application of economic theory to real-world European policy debates and challenges, using empirical data to test theoretical predictions.
We begin with the historical and institutional foundations of the EU.
We then dive deep into the theory and practice of monetary integration, focusing on the Euro and Optimal Currency Area theory.
Subsequent sections explore the workings of the European Central Bank, fiscal policy constraints under the Stability and Growth Pact, and the drivers of long-term economic growth, including the role of innovation, technological progress and AI.
Finally, we will analyze regional disparities in income, and the role of cohesion policy within the Union.
